A LA PLAYA EN BUSCA DE OLAS
In a short time, from the Hotel Gran Bilbao by metro, bus or car, you will find yourself on the area’s best beaches, ready to enjoy the sun, waves and picture postcard sunsets and you can carry your board over your shoulder without a problem, since the Basque Country has beaches that attract surfers from all over the world.
..
.
Here we have prepared a guide to the most accessible beaches, their corresponding metro stops and their main features so you can see how the Hotel Gran Bilbao is the best base for your stay in this Town.
.
EREAGA: urban, quiet and family friendly
By the municipality of Getxo (las Arenas) you’ll find our first beach choice. 500 metres from the metro stop “Neguri“and ten minutes walk through the streets from the “Algorta” stop, you will find this urban beach that in heavy seas has some very interesting waves for bodyboarding.
.
ARRIGUNAGA: small and comfortable
Arrigunaga Beach, which has good waves at the foot of the cliffs, is five minutes from the “Bidezabal” metro station. With a lot of experienced local surfers, this beach is not suitable for beginners, since the waves break on a rocky seabed. It is therefore perfect for experienced surfers who want to jump the waves and combine the sands with terrace bars and, why not think about, a skate session in one of the area’s most legendary skateparks, La Kantera.
.
SOPELANA: wild, rogue surfing
The town of Sopelana is worth the 40 minute trip by metro from the Hotel Gran Bilbao to “Larrabasterra” with two additional choices if you are willing to walk another 20 minutes. One side has the beach of Arriatera-Atxabiribil with more than 830 metres of fine sand and constant waves that are hugged by a sharp cliff on the other.
.
PLENTZIA: waves, walk, snacks and the ‘gift’ of Gorliz
With a metro trip of one hour, plus a 15 minute walk through the coastal town you will reach the bay of Plentzia with its long beach and Gorliz joined to it like an extra present. It is perfect for spending the whole day, begin with surfing and combine the beach with water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, SUP or Big SUP.
.
MUNDAKA, a world surfing mecca next to the beaches of Laida and Laga
With almost a kilometre of fine, golden sand, Laida beach is the largest in the Mundaka estuary, and offers the possibility of a multitude of sports activities: windsurfing, canoeing, sailing and all in a very beautiful natural environment: the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
.
Laida beach truly has the best and longest left wave in Europe, which starts at the Mundaka bar and ends at Laida beach. It is 400 metres long, with a tube that attracts surfers from all over the world and has established itself as a stop on several international surf circuits.
Next to it, there is also the Laga beach, another beach hugged by the mountain and the cliffs with quality waves, not as long as its neighbor Laida, but very powerful.
